Niroe (aka Bill N.) has commissioned an almost all Forge World Krieg army. This behemoth, a Macharius Super Heavy Tank, is getting the full treatment. Well, nearly.
I didn't break out the airbrush on this one but I did do some salt chipping and a three colour camo using masking putty. It's off to a good start at 2:07 into the project.
More to come....
The first Tactical Marine is finished. Because the chipping was easy enough to do, and turned out pretty well, I'm going back to the Assault Marines and adding it to them as well.
The black was done with Polly S "Grimy Black" and makes a wonderful near black grey colour. Using straight black on top of it allows for decent chipping.
The white was done with VMC "Off White" and a touch of GW Fortress Grey. The highlight was... white. Go figure.
The whole of the army should be up to this standard if I can actually get it done.
I'm adding this blog to the BoLS blog roll....
I've decided to do all of the marines with yellow helmets. I will use the black shoulder to do the squad number and type identification. So this guy is a Tactical Marine - red - and he's from the 1st Squad - 1 stripe. Squad 2 will have 2 stripes. Go figure.
I also have updates on "Not Corbulo" but I haven't had time to get decent photos. Even this guy looks seriously washed out thanks to a quick photo under the sun. Ah well. One of these days I'll take photos I'm happy with -- until then I'll have to be content knowing the model looks better than the photo does.
While there are a few changes I'll make when the models go into army mode -- I'm fairly set on the scheme for my Imperial Guard army now.
I was inspired by the Russian coats and German uniforms of World War Two and found paint recipes online for both. The helmet and armor were done with two layers of white wash -- and I'll do one layer on future models.
The head is from Pig Iron but I'm going to try another test model on a standard Cadian head to see how I feel about it. I'd much rather use straight GW products, so it's a competition legal army, but I'm not terribly inspired by the available heads.
The snow was made with baking soda and PVA glue. Nothing exciting there. It's still my favorite snow recipe. A bit thick on this one, perhaps, but that too can change for future models.
For those that might recognize him from Boot Camp and related forums, I do a lot of painting for Niroe. He has the enviable ability to afford really silly quantities of Forge World models. I've painted a Thunderbolt, Marauder... well, a lot of models all told.
Now he's sent me the start of his all Krieg army. They're being painted to a lower standard than I usually do on commission these days -- but I couldn't say no to him or the project.
Without further ado I present the work in progress on the first batch - a Centaur and crew in flecktarn camo:
My first test model for the Imperial Guard theme I want to use. This was done very quickly and without much care for detail.
The helmet and armor improvised camo effect was achieved using a sponge to apply white. The snow effect was done with a Tamiya Weathering Stick -- and while I like the effect on vehicles I'm not sure about it on infantry.
There will be a number of changes for the actual army quality models -- but as a test model I'm really pleased with the results so far.
I recently posted a set of my old 2nd edition models and the 1980s paint jobs that accompanied them.
When I got back into the hobby just a couple of years ago my painting level was roughly equal to what's in the set. One of the models was even painted in 2008! It's nice to see what a bit of practice and access to folks on the intarwebs can do for a fella.
This model - for those that don't know - is the original Ghazghkull Thraka. Really.
